Assignment 14: Photo Essay
For my final photo essay, I decided to take multiple photos of plates of the healthy food that I eat on a daily basis. These photos that I took all have a unified message of being healthy and eating things that are great for your body. When we were assigned the photo essay assignment, I immediately knew that I wanted to do something involving food and healthy living, because that's something I've really been into lately. Food and nutrition would be something I'd really consider doing in my future, so it's a very relevant topic for me. With this series, I'm trying to portray an interest of mine and a lifestyle change that I've made.
When deciding on how I would compose the shots, I knew that I wanted to use lots of fruits and vegetables in my photos because of their bright, varying colors, which really would make all of the plates pop. To further brighten up the photos, I took the shot in the same spot on my dining room table. The light wasn't always consistent because of the changes in weather from sunlight to clouds to rain, but if one day wasn't as bright as another I would try to make up for that in photo shop using the brightening and contrast tool. Aside from the color aspect, these photos are unified in the sense that they all showcase various textures and patterns. The food is not just randomly thrown onto the plates - I strategically ordered them and arranged them in specific positions. I wanted the photos to be much more interesting and complex than just random plates of food. I wanted it to really be interesting and thoughtful.
All of these shots were taken the same way and in the same place to add a sense of unity to the overall set. Each photo featured a centered plate, with small corners of a white table cloth behind. I decided to shoot from straight above because it made it very consistent and showed everything on the plate! It also allowed me to play with arrangement and patterns of the food, like in the swirled apple photo where everything seems to move towards the center. I used different plates throughout the series because I didn't want it to be too similar. I wanted some differences to add even more interest. I used plates that also were very bright, colorful, and patterned so that it would blend in with the food. If I didn't use colored plates I used white, which really emphasizes the natural colors the foods have. Obviously I kept these photos all in color- the color is what makes this series so unique and interesting. Without the color it'd be way too boring. Ultimately I think this series came out pretty great. Taking a simple object like food and making it the centerpiece of an assignment is really interesting and gives a whole new perspective.

Assignment 15: Outdoor Series
During one of our classes, we got the chance to go outside and take some photographs of the outdoor areas around our school and the new building. I took so many photos that it was impossible to break it down into only 6, so I created 2 different series: the sunny, bright, colorful series, and the grey, cloudy, darker series. The weather continuously was changing outside, so it gave me 2 very different ranges of photos that I could use! In the first series, or the sunny series, I included many photos of landscape, flowers, texture, color, and sky scenes. In the darker series, I tried to capture as much sky as I could along with the buildings or trees. The tree shots were my favorite because they added an extra gloominess to the scene. The sky came through the branches and it was very interesting and textural. All the leaves, branches, grass, flowers, and even the clouds gave a textural aspect to each photo in both of the series. I think these photos are pretty cool because all of these things *with exception of the new building* are going to be gone next year. These photos would never be able to be retaken. Its like a final memory.
